Recent local debates concern kids and little league ball teams. At what age should there be "cuts" to field a proper team? At what age should you keep score?

when i was a kid, if you showed up, you played. the only score we kept was runs to see who won. i don't like the idea of "organized by parents" games for kids. they should be able to play as kids

While I think that organized sports for kids has gone completely overboard here in California and is quite expensive there is a place for "some" organization and teamwork. I feel that Little League Baseball ages 10-12, as the one primary organized sport for a kid, teaches them teamwork and playing by the rules. Many times the parents get too involved and make total asses out of themselves in the name of winning. The sport helps them learn to work as a team and to play by the rules that can carry throughout their life. However, parent interference is a big distractor from the activity.

I coached little league baseball for 8 years. I rarely
had a problem with the kids. The parents were a different story. The cussing and yelling of some parents made the game very unenjoyable.
As for selecting the players we had the kids come and
try out. Then later we'd make our picks without the kids present. All kids were put on a team. Some coachs
who were concerned with winning above all else played the poorer players the minimum allowed in the rules.
I felt that if you paid the same you play the same. We
never came in first but all the kids had a great time.
It was an experience I'll cherish forever. Glenn

I also coached Little League and agree with Glenn on his comments. My father once took a team to the Little League World Series in PA. They won Region and got knocked out in SemiFinals. He had a rule that if the parents came to him bitching about the team, etc or caused a commotion in the stands, BRING THE UNIFORM WITH YOU! Never had to enforce the rule, but he never had any problems with it either. Charlie
