Are tax refunds higher in 2024?

The IRS on Friday said that the typical tax refund is about 2.1% higher than a year ago. That means the average taxpayer through February 16 has received about $3,207 from the tax agency, compared with $3,140 at the same time a year earlier.

~CBS News

The article I read was slightly different through March 1st ending date.

The standard deduction is higher so average refunds should be. It raises every 2-3 years or so.
Earned Income credit stayed the same as last year. Child Tax credit is lower than the years that were supplemented by the Covid Relief Bill but same as last year.

I don’t play or really follow golf but knew the Masters Champion got to pick the dinner menu. What I didn’t know was that the Champion also PAID for the dinner! But I guess it’s only right. Can’t expect an expen$ive dinner to be paid by someone else.

I remember that. I was a big fan of Tiger, like everyone was when he was kicking ass. I didn't think it was "racist". That word gets thrown around like a baseball in a triple play. Remember when The Jefferson's was on TV? The comments they'd throw back and forth? That sheit was funny... and nobody got their feelings hurt.

It was stereotypes... and they're not wrong. It's certainly not racist to point out stereotypes. Maybe not on live TV at a golf event... save it for the sitcoms.

Spotted in the Horicon Marsh (about an hour south of Green Bay) five flamingos.
The guess is they got caught up in a storm which took them much further north than normal.

Learned that from a Birder I gave a ride to yesterday.

Sadly, the media made a spectacle of TW and he did hand them a lot of ammo. He "invaded" a formally all white sports bailiwick and that disturbed a lot of people.

“All in the Family” was the true leader in that clubhouse. The things out of Archie Bunker’s mouth were so despicable and yet so out there that you just hadda laugh. For various reasons I rarely watched the show but even when I could, I didn’t ‘cause I just didn’t “get it”. Comedians in Hawaii often made fun of the ethnic stereotypes and if I hadda guess, 98.2% of the audience laughed it off and thought nothing of it. These days there’s no way you can say what they said and get away with it. People are just so sensitive! Frickin’ wimps! d'oh!

Archie Bunker's character was intentionally created to be over the top by Norman Lear. Archie was a parody of a racist, mysoginistic, homophobic and those against the 60's culture folks, Mike Stivic (Meathead) played the other side. I personally think it is one of the best sitcoms ever made. It and the spinoffs took on multiple issues during the day in ways no other sitcom(s) did. A sitcoms that, underlying, addressed social and political issues without forcing one side or the other. The scenes with Archie and Meathead in their debates are great.

Most of those shows (All in the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons) back then would NEVER pass the censors now days. The main characters were created intentionally to push the limits and designed to be a parody of some people back in the day and can still apply to some folks today.

My brother lives about 20 min from the Horicon Marsh. We drive through it when I go visit. Last year him, me, and my kids did a nature walk through there one day. They have a lot of trails and boardwalk things to walk along. It's a beautiful place.

It's a main stop for migratory birds in the spring and the fall. I think during migratory season the speed limit on that road (Hwy 26?) is reduced and enforced to cut down on road kill for waterfowl crossing the road to get to the other side.

Root beer's main flavor is actually wintergreen.
Now that I've told you, you'll smell and taste it.

Mountain Dew contains orange juice.
Says it in the ingredients too.

Same. Drinking one now, I was told that when I grabbed it and to be honest that may have just ruined root beer for me. Hope it doesn't ruin it for anyone else but that's all I taste now. It's kinda like I'm drinking mouthwash now.

I don't drink much soda... but on occasion I will indulge and have a ginger ale. If I see some old time cream soda, or if I am in RI and see Birch Beer... I kinda have to get one.

I believe it contains sassafras root, but wintergreen is the main and strongest flavor.

Nother little tidbit, sassafras trees are what they use to make MDMA or "ecstasy". Not the root though.

I'll be dammed, no wonder root beer no longer tastes very good.

Why Do Some People Think Root Beer Tastes Like Mouthwash?

https://www.allrecipes.com/article/why-does-root-beer-taste-like-mouthwash/

Quote:
Root beer, like the one we know and love today, was first commercially sold as an extract in the 1880s. You would buy the root beer extract (which was primarily made from sassafras), then mix it at home with water, sugar, and yeast. People loved it so much that the company behind the extract, Charles E. Hires Company, began selling root beer in bottles in 1893.

After a few years, more root beer manufacturers started popping up around the U.S., like Barq's, A & W, Dad's, and Mug Root Beer. All the root beers were basically made up of the same ingredients: either sassafras or sarsaparilla, licorice root, ginger, mint, cinnamon, and vanilla.

Root beer experienced a real boom during Prohibition when Americans couldn't buy real beer, so they turned to root beer as an alternative.

The ingredients in root beer pretty much stayed the same until 1976 when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the use of sassafras in food. The FDA discovered that the chemical found in sassafras, called safrole, caused cancer in rats — so sassafras is now considered carcinogenic.

That meant root beer manufacturers had to find a new main ingredient for their sodas: enter wintergreen. The wintergreen leaf was always an ingredient in root beer, but with sassafras gone, it took the front seat as the main flavor.

A guy that use to post here, AndyTV, sent me a box of sassafras hunks to use for smoking meat. He had a bunch of the trees on his property. It has a unique mild and different flavor. I liked it.

Sad to say I have no more sassafras but I'm still an a$$... so I got that going for me.

Even more in towns with a military base nearby. IMO, payday and check loan places make loan sharks look good.

I can't believe that 30%+ isn't usury, but I understand that is the rate on certain credit cards. I think where they really hammer people is the "loan fee."

I was thinking the same thing. I don't use credit cards but I remember hearing the max they could charge was 22%. But that was 20 years ago and I was also told it varies from state to state. Some states have different lending laws.

You can buy a 55 gallon drum and a 275 gallon tank of lube on Amazon.
The 55 gal. drum is about $1000. Several of us azzhats at the local shpo are thinking of pitching in to send one to our lawyer buddy.

I guess I always assumed gelato had a higher fat content, hence why it was more decadent, smooth, etc. Cool to know it's the "healthier" option!

Couple things:

Found this plant, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podophyllum_peltatum, the "May Apple" growing near my creek on the eastern edge of our yard.

I picked 5 or 6 of them for my wife (she likes wild flowers) and she identified them. The native Americans used it "as a an emetic (induce vomiting), cathartic (make you ****),[18] and antihelmintic (dewormer) agent." We have a lot of them around that section, near the creek.

Found this tree growing along the northeast part of our property, tiny Sassafras trees: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sassafras

Sassafras trees that are so tiny they look like small plants. Much smaller than the smallest sapling.

I'm going to dig up one of the bigger ones, and put it in a pot. Sometime this summer or early fall I'm going to plant it in the center of our yard, hopefully.

The rest of them will get the brushcutter treatment this week, along with the weeds.

The roots on Sassafras trees are runners. Just FYI. We’ve got several.

So they grow a horizontal root system with smaller sassafras trees popping up here and there? Not just one vertical stem?

That is correct. The pop ups are manageable but the roots keep traveling laterally and if you have flower beds etc. they can be a pain in the butt. The roots do make a very nice tea though. It was my grandmother’s favorite. Good to settle stomach and ease loose bowels as well.

EDIT: taken from The Spruce website

“ If you grow sassafras as a specimen, it does not require much pruning other than removing weak branches in late winter or early spring before tree leaves out. It is, however, a tree that colonizes the area, sending up small sassafras in the surrounding area. This is not a big deal if you mow or weed regularly, but if you want a low-maintenance tree, this may not be the one for you.”
