All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records on Prime

I knew a little of the Russ Solomon / Tower Records story but not a whole lot about the (over)expansion and the downfall. As a former competitor of TR, a part of me was snickering when the bottom fell out but there was also a part of me that was sad to see the overall collapse of the retail record business with TR leading the way.

It Ain’t Over on Netflix

From IMDb:

“An intimate portrait of a misunderstood American icon, this emotional and uplifting documentary about Yogi Berra takes us beyond the caricatures and "Yogisms," and into the heart of a sports legend whose unparalleled accomplishments on the baseball diamond were often overshadowed by his off-the-field persona.—Vanishing Angle”

My favorite Yogism: “Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.” Laugh

Continuing on with baseball themed stuff:

Facing Nolan on Netflix

From IMDb:

“In the world of Major League Baseball no one has created a mythology like Nolan Ryan. Told from the point of view of the hitters who faced him and the teammates who revered him, Facing Nolan is the definitive documentary of a Texas legend.“

Midway through and while I have more respect for Nolan’s career, still don’t feel he’s in my top 2 of all-time greatest pitchers. Mebbe in the general conversation but not when you get down to the very top of the pyramid.

What can you say about this giant in the music industry? An incredible career that started in the mid-60s and is still going!

Netflix

I was a lousy student in my high school Freshmen year so didn’t do too well in World History so I’ll use this series as a refresher course.

On Peacock..... The series is called In the Know.

For those of you who loathe 80% of what National Public Radio, this series is not only for you, it is Spot On! Rips these self absorbed, over the top personalities a 100 different ways. Even if you are in the 20%, you'll see the humor in it.

Easy to binge, trying to slow down.

If you need further selling of it, its done by Mike Judge. Office Space, Beavis & Butthead etc.

Four Falls of Buffalo

Netflix

Missed this a few years ago when it was on ESPN. In some ways I would like the Bills to win a Super Bowl within the lifetimes of Mark Levy and his players.

I remember when I couldn’t wait for the next issue of “Rolling Stone” and BFT was one of the main reasons.

Brooklyn Nine Nine.

I get how I missed it, but not sure how nobody said anything about it.

Funny stuff. Excellent cast and well done. Seasons to wade through. Some episodes are better than others but they build off each other too.

Ricky Stanicky

Have the remote handy. You're going to laugh so long about some gags that you're going to miss dialog.

Poor Things on Hulu

Bizar, fascinating and darkish.

It focuses on Bella Baxter, a woman in Victorian London who is brought back to life via brain transplant and embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery.

I concur. "Ricky Stanicky" is hilarious.

I'd like to share the plot because that's what got me to watch it when it was recommended to me. 3 friends create a fake friend "Ricky Stanicky" to blame things on and use as an excuse. Eventually they need to produce Ricky to prove his existence so they hire an actor played by John Cena to pretend to be Ricky.

"That's My Boy" is currently on Netflix and is also hilarious.

Started it. Kinda like it.

Also finished "Shogun". Well, up to Part 5. It's subtitled but visually is one of the best TV shows for cinematography. I read the book after watching the older version starring Richard Chamberlain in the starring role. The newer one follow the book a lot tighter, but it's a lot longer too.

Animal House on Netflix

Saw this in the theater back-in-the-day. Iirc, it was a “sneak preview” so didn’t know too much about the plot, who was in the movie, etc. Of course knew who John Belushi and Donald Sutherland were but the rest of the cast were relative unknowns.

Lotta great scenes, too many to name but the cafeteria scene with Belushi is an all-time favorite. “I’m a zit.”
