I love making homemade bread. I tried to do my own sourdough starter to make some homemade sourdough bread. It took a couple weeks to grow the starter and it worked as it should but when trying to make the bread in a bread maker, it didn't work out.

One of my other favorite breads is pumpernickel but I haven't made any for a while. I need to buy some more molasses.

I haven't had much luck with the couple bread machines I tried so I punted on those things. Now I just stick with the old fashioned way. It's not really hard to do and the smell of fresh bread in the air is wonderful.

I tried testing the low fuel signal on my Honda CR-V recently. It starts giving me a signal with 30 miles left per the algorithm so I just kept driving until it said 0. Pulled into Costco and filled up the 15 gallon tank with 12.2 gallons. The car gets over 30mpg so I still had about 85 miles before it was really empty. WTF?

Those Miles Until Empty, just like backup cameras have wild variances. One vehicle I drove had a message “51 miles to empty” which was fine because was only 38 miles from the shop. Got up to 70 briefly to pass a vehicle. Once I settled back to 62, the gage said “33 miles until empty”. Called the boss told him I was going to come up short.

He said I’d be fine. He was right.

^ Ditto from me. If I ever meet you or your wife in person, I will not wear a target Tee shirt.

I think tomorrow I'll be cooking some ribs to eat. Son want's tacos for lunch before he heads off to work. That's doable but I'm still gonna make some ribs. St Louis ribs low and slow cooked in the oven rather than sparking up the grill. Prolly do some pork chops in the crock pot too since I thawed them out. The oven will be taken for the ribs so I'll try out a new crock pot pork chop (say that 5 times fast) recipe. Prolly toss a few potatoes in the oven while the ribs are cooking. I'm a fan of baked potatoes.

Damn, I'll be eating pig for the next couple of days when you factor in leftovers for lunch. Then again the tacos will use cow and maybe fry up some chicken tenders to balance the animals' contributions.

If you boil it down... it's actually a vegan diet. Cows, pigs, and chickens eat and process veggies. Then I eat the processing machine and I'm just at the end of the food chain.

Good shooting Gene and wife!

Glad you made it back safely, danm.

Bucky, I will post a recipe in the thread for the best, most perfect baked potatoes I have ever made. It's the ATK recipe.

My daughters school had the annual dad/ daughter dance tonight. Man, I love my kid but I cannot stand some of her friends... I am drinking tonight to decompress.

Sunday morning folks. Visitors left early this morning headed for Long Beach and as the saying goes:

"Fish and visitors stink after three days." Technically, there was no stink involved as we are always happy to see our family and we had a great time entertaining but it's nice to be able to have a cigar again.

And.... congrats to Gene and Mrs Gene.

Happy Sunday folks.

Stogie, I saw that recipe that you posted. That's pretty much the way I make my baked potatoes with one difference. I don't dissolve the salt in water - I actually didn't think about that option and will have to try it.

Generally this is the way I bake them. Coat them in olive oil and then with kosher salt or sea salt (any course salt of your desire). Bake until done. Spit open, season with salt, pepper, butter and chives. I typically use russet taters or sometimes yellow depending on which ones I have on hand.

My dad does this drive 6x/yr. He says it never takes more than 16hr, and usually does it in 15. Says only place you can't cruise 15 over is southern GA. Drive down was 17.5hr because weather. I tried to fly on the way home, 83mph on the adaptive cruise.

Atlanta traffic was worse than usual.

Chattanooga area traffic was worse than usual 30 minutes to get through there

Nashville was really bad too. Lost 30m there

Monteagle descent was down to 1 lane with a flagger closing it for construction letting about 10 cars through at a time. That ate up over an hour.

Louisville had an accident on the south end.

Indiana had state troopers everywhere I held 5 over and they were stopping people who had passed me slowly. So I held 5 over.

17.5 hours. 1100 miles on the nose. 62.8mph. Speeding brought my mileage down to 19 for the return trip. Trip down I got 23, same time.

ETA: The light/chime comes when the computer says 30 miles left. I rarely go that low as it's well over 300 miles and I like to stop and move around at least every 4 hours. The first stop only took 16.x gallons of my 19.5g tank. The last stop the computer said 16 miles range and I bought 18.7 gallons so that's pretty spot on at 20mpg.

On the way down you had the jet stream and the the trade winds helping to push the vehicle while on the way back they worked against you. People overlook the impact of the trade winds and the jet stream during travel. Oh wait... you weren't flying or sailing.

Accuweather says it should get to the mid 30s outside today where I live. Don't matter to me. Gonna be doing some cooking and other domestic chores around the house.

Snapped the head of my cordless vacuum sweeper stick thingy so that is destined for the trash (RIP cordless vacuum sweeper stick thingy). Guess I'll have to fire up the real vacuum to finish. I like the cordless vacuum sweeper stick thingy for hardwood floors. Lighter, convenient and you don't have the cord that needs to be plugged in when you move from room to room. I'll have to buy a new one.

Until then, my life will be in chaos. I don't know what I'm gonna do without a vacuum sweeper stick thingy. Woe is me. I'll have to contemplate this major life decision during a nap sometime today and while the ribs are cooking low and slow.

Purchased several hundred cigars while I was down there. Bored on my tablet sitting around doing nothing for a week except reading cigar reviews and looking for deals. Most should be sitting at the post office for me to pickup since I had a hold mail order on my address. But UPS decided to say fuggit and deliver two boxes to my house instead of the post office. Brother in law drove up to get them for me and put em in the house. On this hoarding run I swore I'd do a better job of cataloguing them. At the minimum writing the month and year on the cello and/or the box. That's today's chore.

Bags are all unpacked and laundry in the washer. Chickens fed and watered, kitty litter changed. Still need to wash the Ridgeline but that can wait. Carwash too busy on the weekends.

I probably need to expand my storage too. My two big crates are gonna be full. Looks like Home Depot has gasketed totes Husky brand. That'll be a Monday trip too. I'm sick of crowds.

I never understood why people go on vacation and then mainly stay at the hotel/condo/campground. Why even go? A lot of ppl do that though.

I woulda hit a section of the Florida Trail and at least spent a day or two at the beach--Atlantic side. Maybe take one day to do nothing while I recover from something I already experienced.

I definitely save being bored and doing stuff I don't want to do for the house.

We did Disney, we went to a train museum down the road, we went mini golfing. We went to both the Gulf and Atlantic side last year, saw a rocket launch, went to a zoo. We'd planned to go to a state park and go hiking but the first two days were cold and rainy, then Disney day, then 2 pool days which the boy said he'd rather do a pool day than go to Universal. Pool days sitting in the lounger getting sunburned and reading cigar reviews/buying on my tablet were my favorite days. This isn't just a hotel pool, it's a fancy Mariott resort with 4 or 5 pool areas, big projector screens by the pool playing movies, live entertainment poolside etc. We could stay on the property and not feel like we missed out on "vacation".

I'm happy with what we did. The lodging was free - my parents get a multi room suite for a week twice a year and invite one of their kids and families down. This was a bonus trip for us cause one of my sisters couldn't go so we said we'll take it. We go often enough there's no pressure to pack in a bunch of stuff.

I'll take bored and doing nothing on vacation over a stressful event-filled itinerary. The only thing I wish I could change is allow smoking by the pool. At least when we're camping at Indiana Dunes I can smoke a cigar on the beach. Herfing

Glad you had fun. There's been a few trips we took it easy, but most of them were a blur. I can see relaxing a little considering that you go there often.

I always wanted to check out Indiana Dunes, but we haven't done a long trip since we moved up here. I've hiked southern Indiana a couple different times...Hoosier National Forest and Patoka Lake. Got a really beautiful pics of the Ohio River from Charlestown State Park and a little pull over spot in Leavenworth, Indiana. I also really liked Clifty Falls State Park. Great waterfall and rock formations. You ever been to that state Park?

Just got back from getting a new burn barrel off some guy that literally lived on top of a mountain. He said he has 90 acres, but I'd say if you put it all together he doesnt even have an acre of flat, unless it's somewhere back in his woods. Crazy steep...

Clifty Falls is my wife's favorite.

I like spring mill for the history. She don't care about history, prefers natural scenery. Family favorite is Turkey run. They have a lot of stuff built by the CCC, so my history side is satisfied and they have scenery not typical for indiana, so her preferences are met. And they have a pool so the boy is happy.

Dunes is alright, it's a half hour away so we go there the most. Can run home to take care of the cat and chickens and run back to camping. A lot of the cool historic stuff I was part of the restoration team 25 years ago but it's all off-site from the campground. The cool trails are up and down sand dunes so it's a workout. The flat trails don't have much to offer.

The beach is nice, but it's very loose sand and hard to walk in. Gotta walk a ways away from the approved swimming area to enjoy the beach with dogs and cigar. But few people walk that far so it's really nice.

Making some blackened pork chops sous vide. Pork chops sammiches for dinner.

Neither wife nor I wanted to go anywhere and there's not much food in the house so I dug in the freezer to cook what I could find. Had some buns, ground beef, chicken breasts, and pork chops. Already had burgers and chicken in Florida so I went with the porks

Wife went to the store today (next county over bc this county doesn't have a store) and the bologna I get for my lunches is up to $7.78 plus tax. To me that's insane. It's bologna, not steak. Lol

Couple yrs ago it was 3 or 4 dollars.

I hate to break it to you, but COSTCO sirloin steak is regularly $9.99/lb and goes on sale every fe week for like $8.99/lb. What the F brand of bologna do you eat?

The Ekrich brand that my grocery store carries is $7.99/lb. $6.99/lb if you don't have them slice it. I wanted to try a smoked bologna chub and bought a whole one thinking it would be significantly cheaper, but they only gave $1 off for buying it whole.

It was 100% not worth it even if I got it cheaper.

Thinking mebbe the next time there’s a decent sale on pork chops, I’ll get a few and marinate some in teriyaki sauce then grill them. Use some white bread, Kewpie mayo and voila! pork sammiches! And mebbe a piece of lettuce too.

It's not even deli meat level like Danm mentioned. Oscar Meyer Beef Bologna $7.78 per one pound container. Lol Like I said it was 3 or 4 dollars just a couple yrs ago...

It's funny that you mentioned beef prices...we pay $4.29 per pound for ground sirloin. Cows are raised by a local farmer a county over, they're grass fed and free range. It's quality meat. We pay $10.99 a pound for ribeye and NY Strip steaks from the same guy...

So idk what the deal is with grocery store prices. Some days I think it's inflation, some days I think it's pure greed, but more than likely it's both.

Have you ever been to Shades State Park? From what I've seen on Youtube they have some great trails there. Really nice rock formations. It's close to Turkey Run.

If I ever take another trip to Indiana, I'd do Turkey Run/Shades/Cataract Falls for a few days, then make my way up to the Dunes/Lake Michigan.

I've been looking at visiting Presque Island on Lake Eerie. For that trip all I'd have to do is head west out of the mountains, hit I-79 and it would take me north all the way to Eerie, Pennsylvania. That's by far my closet route to the great lakes...

No shades. No electric campsites. I like campering a lot more than camping. I hate primitive camping, I want an air conditioned comfortable place to spend the night. We tried family tenting one night last August. Never again. Solo is fine, but not with everyone.
